A departure from the Skywalker saga
It appears Disney and Lucasfilm are ready to take Star Wars in a new direction. Yesterday, the production company announced that a new trilogy was on the way, tapping The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman. According to the official Star Wars site, Johnson has a “blank canvas” with which to work, offering him complete command over the trajectory of the trilogy. He’ll write and direct the first installment.
Another three-piece may seem like oversaturation (or at least an easy win for the franchise) as it readies a standalone Han Solo feature for next year, starring Donald Glover as the iconic Lando Calrissian and Alden Ehrenreich as the lead (which follows Rogue One in non-trilogy features) but with volumes of non-canonical material to pull from and the collective creative capacity of a Disney team, plus, like, literally billions of dollars, Johnson and Bergman basically can’t lose, until they make a bunch of shitty films that is.
Details are still slim, but with Disney’s proprietary streaming platform arriving in 2019, these wouldn’t necessarily be off-the-table for a launch-time incentive for the juggernaut. The battle with Netflix could end the moment a Disney-exclusive Star Wars trilogy is announced. And with Marvel’s recent jump to exclusivity (and an impactful deal in the works for titles out of 21st Century Fox’s catalog,) Mickey and Minnie are muscling their way into PayTV’s future one acquisition at a time.
Watch the report above and the trailer for the upcoming installment below. Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters nationwide on December 15th.
