“Untitled” was purchased last year by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa at art auction house Sotheby’s. The painting is the sixth most expensive work ever sold at auction at the time.

“As I explained when I successfully bought the work, my hope is that art becomes more accessible to a wider audience, and not just enjoyed by a select few,” Maezawa said to The New York Times. “Therefore, it is with great excitement that I begin the journey of sharing this masterpiece — particularly with young people who will carry us forward into the future.”

“One Basquiat” serves as the first museum exhibition of the painting. The work will be showcased on a world tour before residing in a museum Maezawa is building in Chiba, Japan, his hometown. This is now the second Basquiat painting Maezawa owns. The billionaire purchased “Untitled, 1982” for $57.3 million in 2016.

Basquiat had originally sold “Untitled” for $19,000 in 1984.

Late last year came the release of a Basquiat documentary focused on his teenage years. Titled Boom For Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the film dives into his formative years anchored by the backdrop of a shifting New York City, with the young artist already full of the kind of self-assuredness that would come to mark his later years.
