It appears Badu had it precisely right
Late last year, in the weeks that followed D.R.A.M.‘s debut album, the Virginia singer caught a massive, seemingly overstated endorsement from Erykah Badu when the r&b goddess crowned him “the lovechild of ODB, George Clinton and D’Angelo.” It was bold and if you didn’t believe it then, you just might now.
Today, another high-powered co-sign arrives in the form of a production from Rick Rubin on the psychedelic new single “Check Ya Fabrics.” A soulful suite with all of the fusion flourishes of an early Earth, Wind & Fire record, the track finds D.R.A.M. in a very blond(e)d, stream-of-consciousness mode, dipping in and out of a cartoonish up-pitched croon, not unlike the aforementioned funk forefather.
