Taking to Twitter Friday morning, Trump wrote the following:

The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!

Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said ‘take them out.’ Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!

The comment, according to a report from The Washington Post came up during a meeting between Trump and Democratic and Republican lawmakers who were trying to pitch a bipartisan immigration proposal, which Trump ultimately turned down.

The remark was made when the issue of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was discussed. When finding out that the program would affect people from Haiti, Trump said “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

Trump also reportedly said “Why do we need more Haitians?” and “Take them out” during the meeting as well.

Raj Shah, the White House deputy press secretary, did not deny the “s**thole” remark but did issue the following statement:

Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people. Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation.
