“We have had an active shooter incident at Rancho Tehama Elementary this morning,” a statement from the Corning Union Elementary School District website read. “There are confirmed injuries. We are cooperating with law enforcement during this investigation but do not have specific details at this time.”

A number of nearby residents and business owners said that they heard at least 100 gunshots, while one parent, Coy Ferreira, said said he was dropping off his daughter when he heard gunshots.

“One of the teachers came running out of the building and told us to all run inside because there was a shooter coming,” Ferreira told California, television station KRCR. “So we all hurried up and ran and told the students to get in the classrooms.”

Ferreira said he saw one young boy shot in the foot and chest and a second student shot in the arm. Students at the school were airlifted for medical care after gunfire broke out.

The shooter’s name has not been released and it was not disclosed if the attacker was a man or a woman.
