Five Years Later, Azealia Banks Issues an Apology to Lil Kim

“The girls love and adore you, I still adore you.”

These days, if a statement is coming to or from Azealia Banks, there’s a certain level of messiness you can assume will follow. But that’s not how this one played out. And that’s probably good for all parties involved.

Yesterday, per Rap Radar, the embattled Harlem MC took to Instagram to issue an apology to Bed-Stuy heavyweight and queen of the Bad Boy Family, Lil Kim, who Banks had targeted in a barrage of social media shots in 2012 when a collaboration between the two appeared to fail before any real work had begun. Banks allegedly wrote a verse for Kim for a record that was either axed or fell through due to the vitriol she slung via Twitter, blasting Kim for not writing her own lyrics.

But it was a different tune in the comment section yesterday, with Banks claiming the incident was a “misunderstanding,” and that what she sent over shouldn’t have been perceived as an attempt to write for Kim, rather a framework in which she had envisioned Kim’s contribution, and what that might sound like. Banks chalks it up to being “young and excited,” as she was only 21 years old at the time.

Kim responded with regal grace, gratitude and a touch of pedanticism, offering “Im so proud of ur constant attempt at growth.”
