- Meghan Markle reportedly met the queen for tea in Buckingham Palace.
- Prince Harry apparently wanted the meeting to be relatively informal because he knew Meghan would be nervous.
- He also didn’t want a lot of attention on the meeting.
- There have been reports of a meeting before, but this had the most details.
It’s always stressful meeting your partner’s family. It’s especially harrowing when they live in Buckingham Palace.
Prince Harry has reportedly finally introduced actor and philanthropist Meghan Markle, who he has been dating publicly since October 2016, to his grandmother, the queen.
The meeting apparently happened “last Thursday evening” in the palace, according to The Daily Mail. The pair reportedly had tea with the queen, and the meeting was made “deliberately informal,” The Daily Mail reports. Harry made sure of this partly because meeting the queen is understandably terrifying, and he wanted to put Meghan at ease.
Allegedly, Harry also wanted to keep things quiet in the castle because he and Meghan’s relationship has been so highly publicized; keeping the teatime informal allowed it to go more unnoticed, according to The Daily Mail.
Lest you think the queen is unlike your grandma, the Daily Mail reported that she loves to have her tea served at 5 p.m. and enjoys when her grandchildren are able to join her. They apparently dined on her usual selection of sandwiches, fruit, plain scones, and cake as well as the queen’s “own blend of Darjeeling and Assam tea.”
Meghan has reportedly met most of Harry’s family before, including Kate Middleton and Harry’s father, Prince Charles, who approved of her. Although it’s been reported that Markle has met the queen before, the report of this meeting seems to have the most details. That said, it should be taken with a grain of salt.
Kensington Palace told the Daily Mail that they are refusing to comment on stories related to Meghan and Harry, so we won’t know for sure if this meeting actually took place, unless Harry or Meghan say so themselves.
But if a royal engagement is as “inevitable” as reports are making it seem, it makes sense that a royal meeting would happen sooner rather than later, as Harry needs his grandmother’s permission to propose to Markle. But if she’s as charmed by Meghan as the rest of Harry’s family — and the world — seems to be, they’ll have no problem there.
