Donald Trump has defended his conversation with the widow of U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson.
On Wednesday, Trump addressed the call he had with Myeshia Johnson, saying that he was “extremely nice to her” while also saying that he has “one of the great memories of all time.”
“I respect her, I respect her family, I certainly respect La David, who I, by the way, called La David right from the beginning,” Trump said. “They put a chart in front, La David, it says La David Johnson.”
He also accused the media of not highlighting the other phone calls he has made to military families, and said that everyone else he has talked with “couldn’t have been nicer.”
“I was extremely nice to her,” Trump said. “Nobody has more respect than I do. Nobody.”
Earlier this week Johnson criticized Trump’s call, saying that he failed to “remember my husband’s name.”
“I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name, and that’s what hurt me the most because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country why can’t you remember his name,” Johnson said in an interview with ABC News. “That’s what made me upset and cry even more because my husband was an awesome soldier.”
After Johnson’s interview was released, Trump took to Twitter to dismiss the widow’s account of the phone call, saying that they had a “respectful conversation” and he spoke Sgt. Johnson’s name “from the beginning” and “without hesitation.”
I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!
